ISTANBUL CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENT PSYCHANALYTIC PSYCHOTHERAPY ASSOCIATION (ICAPPA) PSYCHOANALYTIC CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENT PSYCHOTHERAPY FORMATION

As an application of psychoanalysis to children and adolescents, psychoanalytic child and adolescent psychotherapy requires a special training (formation) that must meet certain criteria in different areas. As a full member of European Federation for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Federation (EFPP), ICAPPA’s training offers candidates deep knowledge, experience and competence in psychoanalytic child and adolescent psychotherapy. Although different from each other, our formation consists of 5 subsequent modules. MODULE 1: Introduction to Psychoanalytic Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy

Module outline: Introduction to the works of psychoanalysts and child psychoanalysts who contributed to the development of the theory, especially Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis, which forms the basis of psychoanalytic child-adolescent psychotherapy to give basic information about the original theories and ideas of child psychoanalysts and their reflection in practice.

Entry requirements: Have a BA degree in Psychology or Psychological Counselling and Guidance or having an MD degree and a specialist degree in psychiatry

Duration: Will be announced in every application date.

MODULE 2: Infant Observation

Infant observation offers the observer the opportunity to experience and learn about development by directly observing a baby from its birth. In addition to gaining observation skills, it helps the person to get used to pre-verbal communication. Infant observation, which is one of the cornerstones of psychoanalytic child-adolescent psychotherapy, enables the observer to witness the intense psychosomatic experience while developing the receptivity ability of the observer.

Module outline: Observing an infant from birth, once a week for two years, and ensuring proficiency in the field of infant observation by sharing the observation notes and experiences in the infant observation group at weekly seminars.

Entry requirements:

– Having at least a BA degree in Psychology or Psychological Counselling and Guidance or having an MD degree and a specialist degree in psychiatry

-Having completed Module 1 and being accepted in the interview

– Going through individual psychoanalysis or being in psychoanalytic psychotherapy with a psychoanalyst at least one year (no less than 2 sessions per week).

Duration: Once a week of observation and 90 minutes of group discussion (for 2 years).

MODULE 3: Theory (Advanced)

Module outline: To provide the necessary theoretical equipment to become a psychoanalytic child-adolescent psychotherapist.

Entry requirements: Having completed Modules 1 and 2 and being a member of ICAPPA.

Duration: 2 hours once a week

MODULE 4: Group supervision

Supervision ensures that the transition of knowledge to use it in practice in psychoanalytic child-adolescent psychotherapy. The first stage of supervision is group supervision.

Module outline: The candidate will be able to share the therapeutic process of the case with the group and the supervisor, as well as participating in the presentation of the cases of other group members as a discussant, and benefit from their experiences.

Entry requirements: Having completed the 1st year of the Module 3 and working actively with children and adolescents

Duration: At least 80 hours of group supervision and each candidate has to present their case at least 5 times.

MODULE 5: Individual supervision

Individual supervision is the most important and the final module of our formation.

Module outline: It aims to enable the candidate to gain the ability to work alone, to decide to start psychotherapy, to continue and to terminate it at the appropriate time by performing psychotherapy studies with cases of different age groups under the supervision of a supervisor. At least 3 cases from 3 different age groups (oedipal child, latency child and adolescent) should be followed up at least twice a week. Two of the cases that will be followed up for at least 1 year and the other one for at least 1 year with a supervisor.

Entry requirements: Having completed 20 hours in Module 4.

HOW TO COMPLETE TRAINING?

The candidates who complete all the modules make an application with a file including the necessary documents (infant observation approval, seminar approvals, group and individual supervision reports). Candidates who meet the criteria are invited to the final interview.

In this interview, the candidates present one case, a short story of it, the progress of the psychotherapeutic process which is conducted under supervision and the last three sessions of the psychotherapy to the Commission. If the candidates deemed successful, they deserve the title of EFPP approved “Psychoanalytic Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist”.
